ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) là một tổ chức kiểm định chương trình đào tạo được thành lập từ năm 1932 bởi các hiệp hội ngành nghề của Mỹ. Đây là một tổ chức kiểm định có uy tín trong cộng đồng quốc tế, được công nhận bởi Ủy ban Kiểm định đại học (Council for Higher Education Accreditation – CHEA), gồm Uỷ ban Kiểm định Kỹ thuật (Engineering Accreditation Commission – EAC), Ủy ban Kiểm định Công nghệ (Technology Accreditation Commission – TAC), Ủy ban Kiểm định Điện toán (Computing Accreditation Commission – CAC), và Ủy ban Kiểm định Khoa học Ứng dụng (Applied Science Accreditation Commission – ASAC).

Các chương trình được ABET kiểm định là các chương trình về kỹ thuật, công nghệ, điện toán, khoa học ứng dụng, tương ứng do EAC, TAC, CAC, hoặc ASAC thực hiện. Với EAC các tên chương trình phải có từ “engineering”, còn với TAC là từ “technology” như là danh từ ở cuối tên, ưu tiên là “engineering technology”. Một chương trình có thể phải được kiểm định bởi hai Ủy ban khác nhau nếu tên chương trình có chứa các từ hàm ý thuộc hai lĩnh vực khác nhau. Ví dụ chương trình “Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science” phải được cả CAC và EAC kiểm định.

Các tiêu chí kiểm định của ABET gồm các tiêu chí chung và riêng cho mỗi chương trình. Các tiêu chí chung gồm:

1.      Sinh viên (Students),

2.      Mục tiêu giáo dục của chương trình (Program Educational Objects),

3.      Chuẩn đầu ra (Student Outcomes),

4.      Cải tiến liên tục (Continuous Improvement),

5.      Chương trình (Curriculum),

6.      Giảng viên (Faculty),

7.      Cơ sở vật chất (Facilities),

8.      Sự hỗ trợ (Support),

9.      Các tiêu chí của chương trình (Program Criteria).

Quá trình kiểm định của ABET cho một chương trình gồm các bước cơ bản sau:

- Các chuyên viên tư vấn về ABET xem xét tài liệu tự đánh giá của cơ sở đào tạo có chương trình được kiểm định.

- Các chuyên viên ABET tiến hành chuyến thăm kiểm tra thử tại cơ sở đào tạo, rà soát tất cả tài liệu, các môn học, phòng thí nghiệm, và gặp gỡ những người quản lý, giảng viên, sinh viên, cựu sinh viên, doanh nghiệp…

- Một nhóm chuyên viên ABET đến cơ sở đào tạo kiểm định chính thức chương trình.

- Chứng nhận kiểm định của ABET sau khi được cấp sẽ được duy trì ở các năm tiếp theo dưới sự theo dõi của ABET, nếu cơ sở đào tạo muốn.

Các chuyên gia đánh giá gồm các chuyên gia về đánh giá chương trình, những tình nguyện viên từ các trường đại học, các cơ quan chính phủ, các ngành công nghiệp, hoặc những người hoạt động tư nhân.

INTRODUCTION TO ACCREDITATION STANDARDS OF ABET

ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) is a training program accreditation organization established in 1932 by American industrial associations. This is a reputable accreditation organization in the international community, recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), including the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC), Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) and Applied Science Accreditation Commission (ASAC). Programs accredited by ABET are programs in engineering, technology, computing, and applied science, respectively conducted by EAC, TAC, CAC, or ASAC. With EAC, program names must have the word "engineering" and with TAC the word "technology" is the noun at the end of the name, priority is "engineering technology". A program may be accredited by two different Committees if the program name contains words that imply two different fields. For example, the "Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science" program must be accredited by both the CAC and the EAC.

ABET's accreditation criteria include general and specific criteria for each program. General criteria include:

3. Student Outcomes,

4. Continuous Improvement,

5. Curriculum,

6. Faculty,

7. Facilities,

8. Support,

9. Program Criteria.

ABET's accreditation process for a program includes the following basic steps:

 - ABET consultants review the self-study documents of the training institution with the accredited program. - ABET experts conduct a test visit to the training institution, review all documents, subjects, laboratories, and meet with the leaders, lecturers, students, alumni , firms...

- A group of ABET experts will visit the training facilities to officially accredit the program.

- Once completed, ABET's accreditation certificate will be maintained in the following years under ABET's supervision, in case of the training institution needs.

- Evaluators include program evaluation experts, volunteers from universities, government agencies, industries, or private practitioners.
